Living an adventure on wheels is synonymous with freedom, nature and autonomy. But to fully enjoy it, you need to learn how to properly manage three essential resources: the battery, water and gas. If you use them efficiently, you will avoid unexpected issues and be able to extend your stops without worry.
Here are some practical tips to optimise consumption and travel with greater peace of mind and comfort.
How to preserve your motorhome battery
The leisure battery is the one that powers the electrical systems of the living area: lights, fridge, water pump, etc.
- Use LED lights, they consume much less.
- Unplug chargers and devices when not in use.
- Avoid using many electrical devices at the same time.
- If you have a solar panel, make the most of it during the day.
- Driving helps recharge the battery through the alternator.
- Check the battery level frequently from the control panel.
Extra tip: If you stay in the same place for several days, try to carry out the main electrical tasks during daylight hours.

How to save water on board
Fresh water tanks in a motorhome usually hold between 80 and 120 litres. It may seem like a lot, but it runs out quickly if you’re not careful.
- Take short showers (the “navy” technique: soap up with the tap turned off).
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing dishes.
- Store water in bottles for drinking and cooking.
- Reuse water whenever possible (for example, for cleaning).
- Use cloths or sponges to save water when cleaning.
Remember: Empty grey water only in authorised areas and keep the system clean.

How to manage gas efficiently
Gas is used for cooking, heating, and hot water.
- Cook with the lid on to make better use of the heat.
- Plan your meals to optimise cooking time.
- Turn off the heating at night if it’s not strictly necessary.
- Use a moderate temperature to avoid excessive consumption.
- Always carry a spare gas bottle if you can.
Important: Always turn off the gas regulator when not in use for safety.

The magic of a motorhome lies in its autonomy, but this freedom depends on being mindful and responsible with the resources we carry on board.
A motorhome trip is an incredible experience, but it depends on how we manage the resources we carry on board. Saving battery, water and gas is not only smart, but also a way to travel in a more sustainable and safe way.
